Happy Halloween: DIY Spider Web Cookies

Happy Halloween!!  I just love Halloween!  It is a crazy, weird holiday, I mean you knock on strangers doors, dressed as someone else and ask for candy.  Awesome!  However, how can you not love the holiday.  There is just something about it.  So over this weekend to get myself in the mood for Halloween, we carved pumpkins with Jessica and Jesse and then yesterday, I decided to make Halloween Spider Web Cookies.  I was trying to figure out what cool thing I could do without having cookies cutters.  I only have circle cookie cutters and Christmas, so I didn’t really know what I would do.  Then I had an epiphany!  Spider Webs!  Easy and all you need is a circle.  I learned how to do them at one of the bakeries I worked at and I think I did a pretty good job yesterday.

You start off with making sugar cookies and cutting them into circles.  I used this sugar cookie recipe.  Then rolled them out and cut them into circles.

Leave them in the oven for about 10-12 minutes, take them out and let them cool completely.

I left mine on the parchment paper so they would be easier to decorate.  For the decoration, I used orange melting white chocolate and melting chocolate bark.  After melting both the barks, use a spoon and your palete knife to spread the orange white chocolate on the cookie.

From here using your parchment paper bag, you are going to put 4 circles on your cookie like below.

Next, take a toothpick and drag the toothpick from the very center circle to the outside like this.

Go around the circle as many times as you would like to create the spider web illusion.  I went around about 8 times depending on the cookie. Then, let the cookies dry and you have some spooky spider webs for a party or a great treat.

Have a very Happy Halloween!!

Make Your Own Butterbeer

As you all know, I love love love Harry Potter!!!  Did you all see the movie?!!?  If you haven’t, go see it!! Right now!!!  It is ridiculously good.  Mak and I went to see the moment we returned from Minnesota.  We left the airport, drove straight to Hot Topic to find new Harry Potter shirts, grabbed some Chick-fil-a and went straight to the movie.  Let me just tell you, the movie was amazing!!!!  I really don’t know which is my favorite.  However, I will say from reading the seventh book, I did not remember anything.  It was definitely like I had never read the book.  I cried twice in the movie because it was sad obviously and really it is the end of my favorite series!!!!  No more Ron, Harry and of course Hermionie.

Nevertheless, I wanted to continue my Harry obsession and make Butterbeer.  We had it at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter as I have said and it was amazing.  So tonight while babysitting, I tried it out on the kids.  Some liked it, some didn’t.  Me, well. . . I thought it was bloody brilliant (little bit of Ron coming out while writing this)!

Here you can find the recipe and posted below.

Ingredients:

1 cup brown sugar

2 tbsp water

6 tbsp butter

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp cider vinegar

3/4 cup heavy cream

1/2 tsp rum extract

4 – 12oz bottles/cans cream soda

In a medium sauce pan, combine brown sugar and water.  Bring the mixture to a boil and cook until 240 degrees using a candy thermometer, like below.

Take the sauce pan off the stove and add in your butter, salt, vinegar, and 1/4 cup of heavy cream.  Set aside to cool.

Once the mixture has cooled, stir in your rum extract.

In your medium mixing bowl, combine 2 tbsp of your brown sugar mixture and a 1/2 c up of heavy cream.  Use your mixer to beat it until it become thick, do not whip it completely.  If you do mix too long, like me of course, you will have a separation of liquids and will have to start all over again.  It is about 2 minutes of whisking.

Now you are ready to serve.  Divide the brown sugar mixture into 4 glasses.  This will be about 1/4 cup or so.  Then add cream soda and stir.  I added enough cream soda to fill the top of the glass.  After, you then spoon on a bit of the whipped topping and voila you have Butterbeer.  Now go enjoy some!!!

And my favorite kiddos trying out the creation!!!  Have a magical wizarding Thursday!!

Finished Pennant Flags

Look at me, I’m updating twice in a week. That hasn’t happened in quite some time has it. I know you are all so excited. I thought today, I would share the finished product of my pennant flags for the shower. They turned out awesome if you would like to know and everyone at the shower loved them and pretty much just kept telling me how awesome I am. Really I am just a super sewer! Thanks to the help of Mak (aka. Molly) and the super sewer (aka. my madre san), the project was a success and only a day project instead of a two day project all on my own.

Well let me show you some pics so you can admire them and tell me how awesome I am and then you can ask me to make you some. For real, if you want pennant flags, let me know and you can order them from my etsy store!

There you go, the flags.  However, I have one more thing!  When I told Molly about the project I was taking on, I told her, I have to make 20 foot banner flags.  Would you like to know what Molly thought I meant.  She thought I was going to make 1 20 ft flag on each set of ribbon.  So really I was apparently going to only make 5 giant flags.  Anyways,  thanks for letting me share.  Have a happy Wednesday!
